Environmental / Editorial Portraits
Often when a magazine is looking for a portrait of a business leader in Calgary or any individual, they ask that the photo be taken in context to their working environment. This is commonly referred to as environmental or editorial portrait photography is the most common you'll find in any magazine and presents all sorts of opportunities for creativity. They are often quite challenging because of the time restriction the photographer has with the subject matter. Working quick is absolutely essential in editorial photography. Taking time to do research on the person and asking the Editor about the nature of the article I found prepares me best as there is little room for winging it. I also tend to do a variety of sets to ensure the Editor or Art Director has plenty of options to choose from.

Formal Portrait Photography
Firstly I use the term "formal" in the sense that there is a background and lights that I set up. That's where the formal-ness ends. I've been hired by a range of clients to photograph everyone from super star hockey player Sidney Crosby, or coutry music singer Aaron Lines to character portraits (very informal) of Calgary Realtors looking to change their branding to look less stuffy. I've even had ad agencies hire me to photograph their staff (who were terrified of having their photo taken) because I'm apparently a pretty friendly guy. In any scenario I try to make people at ease and comfortable. My style of shooting is often dictated by the nature of the creative direction but often influenced by my own personal style of interaction. I think that the uniqueness Calgary photography market played a big role in that. Nothing beats an honest moment where the camera captures an emotion frozen in time. Not all portraits can be that, but when they are, it's some of the most rewarding portfolio photographs I'm lucky enough to get.
